Mothers-in-law. They can be a woman's best friend, or her most lethal enemy. When the subject comes up, I always remember the tale of a young man whose mom spent his wedding loudly shouting that they would be divorced in six months, set up a fund for their divorce, and other endearing actions. I imagine that woman was a bit like Jane Fonda's unspeakably catty character in the limp "Monster-in-Law." To some degree, "Monster-in-Law" isn't a romantic comedy movie. It's an overlong sitcom episode. Charlie (Jennifer Lopez) is a temp/dog-walker whose dreams are about to come true -- she's engaged to Kevin (Michael Vartan), a sweet and hunky doctor. There's only one small problem: Viola (Jane Fonda), Kevin's strong-willed mumsie, doesn't think that Charlie is right for her perfect son. So Viola does the only thing she can think of -- she starts pranking Charlie, hoping to drive the unworthy future-in-law away. Poisoned food, ripped dresses, wedding disasters and slap fighting all ensue, but soon Charlie gets sick of it and begins to fight back. Who will win, the desperate fiancee or the force-of-nature mom? Yeah, it's not much of a plot. I kept waiting for the laugh track to kick in, and a preview for next week's episode. In fact, the plotlessness is what really hurts "Monster-in-Law." Once Charlie and Viola are introduced, the entire film descends into a series of pranks, which in turn are dropped in favor of warm'n'fuzzy "aw, what hardships you've had." Slapstick ones too -- if Robert Luketic had taken the P.G. Wodehouse route of elaborate pranking, it might have worked. But watching Fonda and Lopez going bonkers at each other isn't very funny. It doesn't help that the screenplay is as limp as the plotting. Poor Vartan is forced to spout endless romance-novel cheez, which is more likely to induce vomiting than thrills -- "What are you doing the rest of your life?". And alas, innocent moviegoers are forced to endure yet more tributes to Lopez's much-hyped posterior, which probably has a stylist and trailer all its own. Jennifer Lopez is the kiss of death to romantic comedies -- there's nothing very funny about her face, her body, or her way of delivering lines. And to be honest, Vartan doesn't fit in this movie any better -- he looks rather confused, as if he isn't sure how he ended up in this particular film. Not to mention a bit overwhelmed by the catfighting. The saving graces? Fonda has wild, hilarious manic energy that overcomes the thinness of her role, and makes her quite fun to watch. And Wanda Sykes, as her P.A., gets the best lines of the whole movie. When the two of them are on the screen together, they're pure hilarity. In fact, forget Lopez -- make the movie about Wanda and Jane, and you've got a hit. Cheesy dialogue and no plot sink "Monster-in-Law," a comedy that leaves you wondering why Fonda chose to return after fifteen years to.... this.

It has been many years since I was a student so I purchased this for the photographs, which are quite outstanding. At first glance the photos are striking for their beauty but on closer examination they reveal the intricate detailing of the costumes. Only negative is too many pages of orcs and such creatures, which although they are magnificently created, they are not particularly pleasant to look at for very long. I feel any LOTR fan would enjoy owning this item.

**Plot Spoiler** Ketzal Sterling is the head of a small gang of well dressed thieves-think of the characters in a Quentin Tarentino film like Reservoir Dogs. He's starts out in the morning with a large diamond ring to give to his girlfriend. He's walking down to the shops to meet his mate when he gets robbed. He calls his main man, they find out who the thieves are and begin to track down the stolen ring. In the meantime, they meet up with some interesting kiwi characters. As it turns out, the ring is a prop for a robbery. Ketzal and his gang recover the ring, go to his girlfriends job, which turns out to be a jewelry shop. We'd been operating under the impression throughout the film that Ketzal was going to propose-hence the desperation to retrieve the ring. Instead he asks his girlfriend to stick the ring in the shop safe. Once she has opened the safe, the crew robs the shop. Ok. So NZ is a small country. Big budgets for films are rare. A lot of things (winning the first America's Cup for example) get done with kiwi ingenuity. I'm willing to cut this film a lot of slack for some good dialogue. But the plot had some major flaws in it. First, if the ring was just a prop for a robbery, this gang wouldn't have gone through an entire film desperate to recover it. They could have used any piece of jewelry that looked reasonably real. Second, except for the guns which have been smuggled in over the past five years by Asian gangs and rifles kept by farmers, NZ does not have guns. Yep. Even the cops don't carry guns on their person. Makes it tough to make a good NZ crime film in the vein of Reservoir Dogs or Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (Widescreen Edition), but it is a fact. Third, four guys roving around posh suburbs like Auckland's Kohimaramara with guns, black suits, and silver ties, would stick out like a sore thumb. If you are going to pull off a six million dollar robbery, you need to keep it on the QT. Still, considering the small budget and seven days of production, this film is good. The dialogue is quick-there is some witty repartee. Ketzal Sterling was right to focus on the dialogue between gang members-on the phone and in person. With a small budget it would have been really hard to stage huge action scenes. For what he had to work with, I think Ketzal did good. There is some promise there. He also did pretty good at overcoming some major stumbling blocks to making a successful small indie film-like having the two main gang members roll around in a junker and explain it as stolen. It would have been too expensive to have a flash vehicle. It makes me really sad that some reviewers have commented that these actors have Australian accents...except for the black actor who is clearly English, this film is kiwi and deserves NZ credit. And let's just get this clear-Peter Jackson, Russell Crowe 3:10 to Yuma (Full Screen Edition), Crowded House Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House, Keith Urban Greatest Hits, and Sam Neill The Piano ARE ALL KIWIS. The American media needs to get it straight. You Move You Die, isn't my favourite NZ film, but it has it's merits. I much prefer Eagle vs. Shark, Heavenly Creatures, Flight of the Conchords - The Complete First Season, or Kombi Nation as examples of excellent film making and for insights into kiwi culture. But even Peter Jackson (the hugely successful director of The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)) started out with low budget delights like Dead Alive.

The first thing I want to say is I am incredibly critical of any movie I watch and it's hard to keep me interested when I can be doing something mroe valuablewith my time. When I saw this on the shelf in the video store, it seemed like it would follow the template of the Guy Ritchie films. Seeing as Snatch and LS are two of my favorite movies, I gave this one a shot. I was NOT disappointed. While the production quality is not the same as Richie's films, which is on purpose, it was just as entertaining. You can definitely see the influence. What's most impressive is this movie was written by Sterling in 7 days and it was filmed in 7 days. Unbelievable. I laughed almost non-stop.

As an esteemed television journalist put out to pasture by the networks and faced with the engagement of her son, Jane Fonda is fierce, funny, and ready to rumble as the title character in Monster-in-Law in a way that the rest of the film itself never really is. Jennifer Lopez, the film's other above-the-title star, is set to marry handsome, wealthy Michael Vartan but has one helluva time dealing with his insanely possessive mother. The result is pretty much what you'd expect--lots of snarls and slapstick and an easy, kisses-all-around conclusion, though it is surprising (and maybe a little disheartening) to watch Fonda throw herself into such disposable comedy with such gusto. Director Robert Luketic, who slept while Reese Witherspoon tottered off with his Legally Blonde, once again relies solely on the assembled talent: He leaves a high-wattage Lopez playing things a little too cute, a reedy Vartan looking visibly disinterested, and canny comedian Wanda Sykes making what she can--which, luckily, is a lot--of her role as Fonda's wisecracking personal assistant (the type of black sidekick role that's an indication of how creakily formulaic the film is). Just hilarious, from start to finish. Loved Jane Fonda and her assistant it was like a comedy from the 60's Compare "Barefoot in the Park". The face plant was just so excellent.
